Transgender Mental Health Resources

Today I have transgender mental health resources. If you read my recent post, Transgender Education for Healthcare Professionals, you know there are many reasons that transgender mental health is greatly affected by systemic inequities, lack of healthcare coverage, and discrimination. Here are resources you can share with your transgender patients, or if you are transgender yourself, hopefully help you get the help you need. If you are in need of guidance or assistance in anyway, from either group, but especially transgender individuals, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network (NQTTCN) is a healing justice organization committed to transforming mental health for queer and trans people of color (QTPoC). We work at the intersection of movements for social justice and the field of mental health to integrate healing justice into both of these spaces. Our overall goal is to increase access to healing justice resources for QTPoC.

Trans Lifeline is a grassroots hotline and microgrants 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering direct emotional and financial support to trans people in crisis – for the trans community, by the trans community.

While it started as a service for people in crisis, that is no longer the case. Trans Lifeline still functions as a crisis and suicide prevention hotline. However, it also serves as a space for trans people who just need someone to talk to.

Trans Lifeline provides live, one-on-one phone support, as well as large numbers of online resources for transgender and gender-questioning individuals. The hotline is open 24 hours a day. It is only guaranteed to be staffed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time, but operators are often also available at other times.

In addition to information resources, Trans Lifeline offers microgrants to individuals who need financial support when updating their name and gender on their legal documents. They accept a limited number of applications each month. However, they will pay the entire fee for most document changes other than birth certificates.

Peer-to-peer support group for individuals living as LGBT – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning.

Many LGBTQ individuals experience negative mental health issues due to the prejudice and other biases they face. Research suggests that queer people are at higher risk for depression, anxiety, and addiction or substance abuse.

Without mental health we cannot be healthy. It is our hope that LGBTQ individuals find LGBTribe to be a safe outlet for them to discuss these challenges and find a sense of community online. Registration is free, and members of our LGBT support group will have access to the latest in social network technology including a dedicated activity stream, forum and chat room. In addition members can participate in the larger wellness challenge through our inspirational wellness tools: wellness tracker, friend reminders, mood mapping and kudos.

I hope these resources are helpful. Please again do not hesitate if you need anything. For more about what led to transgender mental health issues, check out my Disclosure 2020 Media Guide.
