CFY Lessons: Week 11 and 12
CFY Lessons from Week 11 and 12 come from my third month as a CF. This is around the time I started really catching my stride as a CF, but it really does ebb and flow.
CFY Lesson 11.1: Confidence
At work, there are some days and some sessions that are better than others. When I have a good day or a good session, I feel motivated, confident and happy I chose this career. Every win I have with a client or student feels big both for me and them. I love being able to celebrate that. I like to remember these when I don’t have a different kind of day.
But not every day is like that. There are days when I have really bad sessions, get bad feedback from a parent, or just am hard on myself for a mistake I know I made. On these days, I sometimes wish I could go back and change what I did, or question whether I am doing a good job. It’s good in these moments to remember your successes, talk your feelings out with your coworker and supervisor, while also reflecting on your performance in a healthy way. What will you do differently next time? What antecedents led to the challenges you faced in the session? Were there others things going on personally that were distracting? Remember to give yourself grace in these moments. Not every day will be perfect. You may have ups and downs in one day or even one session. The important thing is that this is normal and expected. I’ve seen seasoned SLPs tell me they feel the same thing. As always, at the end of the day, we are helping people and hopefully enjoying doing it.
CFY Lesson 12.1: Future-Based Mindset
When I am feeling down, it also helps me to think about my future as an SLP. Everything I’m doing now is going to help me for future positions. Attending ASHA helped me expand my connections, and learn more about our field. That motivated me too. When I feel stuck, I think about why what I’m doing now matters and how overcoming the hurdle will be a lesson for me to take with me in the future, wherever I end up. Plus, as an SLP there are so many different career paths- if you want to learn more about the areas an SLP can treat, click here.
I hope these CFY lessons are keeping you motivated as you progress. After getting through the first three months, it can feel like you’re in more of a groove, but also the independence can be scary. Keep up the good work!
