This week, I started my second part-time CF! I work at a university coaching college students with disabilities in the areas of executive functioning and pragmatics. This is an area of our scope that’s always been interesting to me, and I’m so excited to start.
That being said, here are my lessons for the week!
Routines
I, like a lot of people, thrive off routines. Having two jobs, I have a daily routine. However, I’m still figuring out how to manage my time outside of work.
Lessons from a CFY 6.1: Developing Balance and Routine Takes Time
One of my jobs ends at 7, and with my commute, I get home pretty late. I usually am exhausted and just shower and sleep. Other days I have more time, but have so many things I’ve been neglecting doing that I end up doing nothing. Finding my routine outside of work is going to take a while and that’s okay. I need to figure out when is the time to cook, clean, exercise and relax. That in itself can be stressful. I’m working on giving myself grace to take my time figuring it out.
Tracking Progress
One thing that’s really clicked for me this week is tracking progress and evaluating goals. I’ve started to try different goals my patients have from previous SLPs and see how appropriate or relevant they are.
Lessons from a CFY 6.2: Progress is Ongoing
I think we can make so many goals and want to target everything, but then get lost in the weeks of what is most appropriate or important for someone. I’m excited to look at the puzzle of all my patients’ progress and even determine what might be missing from their plan.
As a CF, there are so many skills we are trying to build. I think we can get overwhelmed trying to grow all the skills at once. Here’s what we can do!
Lessons from a CFY 6.3: Picking a Focus
As a CF, I’m going to try and focus on a skill I want to develop and learn about every 1-2 weeks. I think this will help me grow on my own and stay on track to becoming who I want to be as an SLP! This week, I’m continuing to focus on evaluating case history, family or patient goals, and progress.
