There are many other types of biases that can relate to race, ethnicity This is important because our biases can cloud even our clinical judgement and decision making. By recognizing and acknowledging them, we will be both a more culturally sensitive and professional SLP that makes the most evidence based and appropriate clinical decisions. Identities that are outside the gender binary. Non-binary identities can fall under the transgender umbrella. Many people identify with a gender that is different from their assigned sex.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Flag&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;Yellow represents those whose gender exists outside of and without reference to the binary, as yellow is often used to distinguish something as its own. White represents those who have many or all genders, as white is the photological presence of color and\/or light. The purple stripe represents those who feel their gender is between or a mix of female-aligned and male-aligned, as purple is the mix of traditional boy and girl colors. The purple could also be seen as representing the fluidity and uniqueness of non-binary people. The final black stripe represents those who feel they are without gender, as black is the absence of color and\/or light.People whose gender is not male or female use many different terms to describe themselves. Other terms include&nbsp;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;genderqueer&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;,&nbsp;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;agender&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;,&nbsp;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;bigender&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;, and more. None of these terms mean exactly the same thing &ndash; but all speak to an experience of gender that is not simply male or female.Recommendations: Trans Center for Equality&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;You don&rsquo;t have to understand what it means for someone respect them. &amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;Some people haven&rsquo;t heard a lot about the identity have trouble understanding them, and that&rsquo;s okay. But identities that some people don&rsquo;t understand still deserve respect.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Use the name a person asks you to use.&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;&nbsp;This is one of the most critical aspects of being respectful of a non-binary person, as the name you may have been using may not reflect their gender identity. Don&rsquo;t ask someone what their old name was.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Try not to make any assumptions about people&rsquo;s gender.&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;You can&rsquo;t tell if someone is this identity simply by looking at them, just like how you can&rsquo;t tell if someone is transgender just by how they look.Pronouns and Advocacy&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;If you&rsquo;re not sure what pronouns someone uses, ask.&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt; Different people may use different pronouns. Many non-binary people use &amp;quot;they&rdquo; while others use &amp;quot;he&rdquo; or &amp;quot;she,&rdquo; and still others use&nbsp;other pronouns. Asking whether someone should be referred to as &amp;quot;he,&rdquo; &amp;quot;she,&rdquo; &amp;quot;they,&rdquo; or another pronoun may feel awkward at first, but is one of the simplest and most important ways to show respect for someone&rsquo;s identity.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Advocate for non-binary friendly policies.&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;It&rsquo;s important for these people to be able to live, dress and have their gender respected at work, at school and in public spaces.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Understand that, for many non-binary people, figuring out which bathroom to use can be challenging.&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;For many of these people, using either the women&rsquo;s or the men&rsquo;s room, if there isn&amp;#039;t a gender neutral bathroom, might feel unsafe, because others may verbally harass them or even physically attack them. These people should be supported by being able to use the restroom that they believe they will be safest in.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Talk to non-binary people to learn more about who they are.&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;There&rsquo;s no one way to be this identity. Some do identify as &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;agender&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;which can vary in meaning for many people but could mean genderless.It&amp;#039;s important to recognize&nbsp;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;gender diversity. &amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;This is an umbrella term to describe an ever-evolving array of labels people may apply when their identity does not conform to the norms and stereotypes others expect.This article is a great explanation of the above concepts.Check out my resource hub for more information.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>gender<\/span> identities, but I did in that moment. No matter the intention, comments of implicit bias can be harmful to certain groups. However, what we can do is bring own attention to our own bias and try to fix it.&nbsp;<\/p><p><b>Explicit bias: conscious attitudes or stereotypes toward a thing, person or group&nbsp;<\/b><\/p><p>Unlike implicit bias, explicit bias has the intent to be discriminatory, or racist, sexist, xenophobic. A person that uses explicit bias is consciously excluding, degrading or discriminating against a certain identity or group. Overtly racist comments, like ones you may see on your Facebook feed, are examples of explicit bias, no matter what the person making them says.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a61fbab elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a61fbab\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2d42297\" data-id=\"2d42297\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aaf4164 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aaf4164\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How Do We Identify Our Internal Biases?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-50efb7a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"50efb7a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-db805c4\" data-id=\"db805c4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-058ab51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"058ab51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Now that we&rsquo;ve reviewed what biases are, how do we figure out what biases we have? Some of you reading this may already know some, but implicit biases are implicit, so they happen without our knowledge. It is our job to recognize them.<\/p><p>One way you can do this is the Implicit Association Test.&nbsp;With this test, &ldquo;you will have the opportunity to assess your unconscious and conscious preferences for over 90 different topics ranging from pets to political issues, ethnic groups to sports teams, and entertainers to styles of music.&rdquo;<\/p><p>I just took it, and here were some of my results:<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: normal;\">Your responses suggested a moderate automatic association of Good with Cold and Bad with Hot.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: normal;\">Your responses suggested a moderate automatic association of Good with Helpers and Bad with Leaders.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: normal;\">Your responses suggested a moderate automatic association of Good with Foreign Places and Bad with American Places.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: normal;\">Your responses suggested a moderate automatic association of Good with Pro-Choice and Bad with Pro-Life.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: normal;\">Your responses suggested a slight automatic association of Good with Emotions and Bad with Reason.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-18805d3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"18805d3\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0df4d8c\" data-id=\"0df4d8c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d05d858 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d05d858\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I plan on taking one test a day throughout the month so I can learn more about my biases. I challenge you to take at least one test this month, and you can be entered to win a product from my <a title=\"The SLP Survival Shop\" href=\"https:\/\/norahspeaks.com\/blog\/slp-survival-shop\/\">SLP Survival Shop<\/a>! My results don&rsquo;t surprise me too much although I did expect to have a little more of an association with reason over emotions. Since I have more of an automatic association with the other areas, what my bias of these opinions may affect my reaction to patients&rsquo; or coworkers views. Medical care involves treating everyone, so it is important for me to work on objectivity in my care.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-90de0ea elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"90de0ea\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2df94cf\" data-id=\"2df94cf\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-648f73b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"648f73b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How Do We Own Our Internal Biases As Healthcare Professionals?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dd470b2 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dd470b2\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ff1f288\" data-id=\"ff1f288\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e258d57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e258d57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In healthcare specifically, our implicit bias can and likely will impact our interactions with and treatment of patients. Implicit bias can take the form of verbal or non-verbal actions.&nbsp;<\/p><p>You may have a perception that a person of a certain culture is less intelligent, and automatically provide your explanations in simple terms. In reality, this person could be in the medical field or may have experience with the medical problem they are having from previous doctor visits.<\/p><p>&nbsp;This will be discouraging and offensive to the patient that this negative stereotype was put upon them by their healthcare provider. It often results in distrust of providers in general if this happens multiple times with different providers. Even if clinicians say they are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, implicit bias can always seep in. We can always learn more about how our bias affects our communication with patients.&nbsp;<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-99ac9eb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"99ac9eb\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0a16733\" data-id=\"0a16733\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8a3507 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a8a3507\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.048px;\">One way you can avoid the situation I explained above is to ask questions before explaining. One question you could ask is: &ldquo;What do you know about _____?&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.048px; font-size: 1rem;\">The patient will hopefully tell you, and then you can build off their background information to explain more.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.048px; font-size: 1rem;\">This involves them in their own education about their medical problem and does not assume any level of knowledge, because an opposite example is a medical provider assuming a patient knows a lot based on their identity, like assuming a white male has prior knowledge about their medical problem. Both situations involve a false assumption and likely lead to a negative patient-provider interaction, and most impactful, the patient not understanding their own health issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a9b5f7d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a9b5f7d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-dc8ded2\" data-id=\"dc8ded2\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3dbf7e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3dbf7e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To own your biases, you must understand what they are, where they came from, and how to consciously change them.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-45911fc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"45911fc\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b869695\" data-id=\"b869695\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad1dc8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad1dc8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li><b>An impactful way to do this is with implicit bias training.<\/b> It may be something your workplace offers. If it isn&rsquo;t, advocate for it! If you are looking for a person to train you, I recommend Cornell Woodson with <a href=\"http:\/\/bravetrainings.com\/\">Brave Trainings<\/a>. He trained me when I was college student working as a Diversity Peer Educator. He has two workshops on unconscious bias and how to address it in the workplace.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.asha.org\/eWeb\/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsresults&amp;cat=CE%20Courses&amp;tpc=cr\"><b>Attend CEU courses.&nbsp;<\/b><\/a>If your organization doesn&rsquo;t, or won&rsquo;t hold group trainings, take it in your own hands if it&rsquo;s financially feasible. I linked the bolded test to ASHA&rsquo;s CEU courses on cultural responsiveness that range from $15-$53 dollars. If these aren&rsquo;t feasible for you financially, here is a list of sites that offer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jillshooktherapy.com\/blog\/my-top-sites-for-free-ceus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free CEUs!<\/a><\/li><li><b>Fill out the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/siteassets\/uploadedFiles\/Cultural-Competence-Checklist-Personal-Reflection.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASHA Cultural Competence Checklist.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/b>My clinical supervisor had students fill out this checklist before we worked with clients on accent modification (which is a whole other soap box for me about how accent mod if problematic, but that&rsquo;s for another day). &lsquo;This tool was developed to heighten your awareness of how you view clients\/patients from<br>culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) populations.<br>*There is no answer key; however, you should review responses that you rated 5, 4, and even 3.&rdquo;<\/li><li><b>Ask more questions, don&rsquo;t assume<\/b>. Like the example I gave before, if you are thinking a patient knows or doesn&rsquo;t know about a topic, or will automatically agree or disagree with certain parts of your treatment plan, <b>ask first!&nbsp;<\/b>&nbsp;While certain cultures tend to have specific values or ideas on things like end of life care or disability, there will be individual variety, so it is always better to ask. Avoid leading questions such as &ldquo;Are you feeling well today?&rdquo; versus &ldquo;How are you feeling today?&rdquo;. Based on their answer, you can follow up with a more specific, closed question. Using open-ended questions is generally good practice that was likely taught in your clinical degree, and can be used here. If you feel yourself asking a closed question, try and change it! You will get more information about this individual&rsquo;s perspective which may align with some common values or viewpoints of their identity, or may not. You won&rsquo;t know until you ask.&nbsp;<\/li><li><b>Learn about&nbsp;<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/cirrie-sphhp.webapps.buffalo.edu\/culture\/monographs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>cultural beliefs.&nbsp;<\/b><\/a>While there is individual variation, I still recommend learning about different cultures and their views. You will learn a lot.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cirrie-sphhp.webapps.buffalo.edu\/culture\/monographs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIRRIE&nbsp;<\/a>has amazing cultural guides, especially if you are working with a patient from a smaller community in your area that you aren&rsquo;t familiar with. Pick a guide, and before your start, write down any assumptions you have about that culture or that you have heard others say. See how they compare.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-618aafd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"618aafd\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d4d70e9\" data-id=\"d4d70e9\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6b0480 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b6b0480\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These are five first steps you can take to identify and own your internal biases. Likely, many of us have <span class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: gender\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;gender&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The World Health Organization defines this as the result of socially constructed ideas about the behavior, actions, and roles of a particular sex. It is not interchangeable with sex, which is based off genitals. It is decided is based on our internal experience, or &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;gender identity&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;.A person cannot choose gender identity, but they can choose words to define it.&nbsp; People can identify as male, female, transgender, non-binary. &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Genderqueer&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;is term used for those who don&amp;#039;t fit into the identity of masculine or feminine. &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Genderfluid &amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;represents those who may feel a woman for some period of time, or a man for another period of time.
