margin-bottom: 6px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #1c1e21; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400;\">There are many celebrations that bring black families together, and some travel to Galveston for the day.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #1c1e21; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400;\">It is important to recognize this holiday and it&rsquo;s significance, but to also remember who it&rsquo;s for.<\/p><div class=\"text_exposed_show\" style=\"display: inline; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #1c1e21; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal;\"><p style=\"font-weight: 400; margin-bottom: 6px;\">If you&rsquo;re a white ally (like myself) attending a Juneteeth celebration, this infographic illustrates five things you need to do.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\">These events are not for us, but this year especially they are about CHANGE. As white people, we need to listen to the needs of black people that aren&rsquo;t being met in education, healthcare, and government policies.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\">The fact that Trump is hosting his first rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma this weekend is unacceptable. Especially because it&rsquo;s the site of a racist massacre 99 years ago this month. Don&rsquo;t underestimate the president, here&rsquo;s very intentional.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\">&nbsp;<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>Happy Juneteenth to the black community. Similar to straight people at pride month, we are guests at these events and need to act as such.<\/li><li><strong>Educate others about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/juneteenth-day-celebration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juneteenth&nbsp;<\/a>and its importance.<\/strong> Don&rsquo;t let it get ignored. We as white people have the privilege to ignore this holiday, as well as the role our ancestors played in slavery and racism post-slavery abolition until today. We need to recognize the damage we caused that attributes to systemic and institutional racism today.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/national\/confederate-monuments\/\"><strong>Advocate for the removals of statues, buildings, memorials<\/strong>,<\/a> etc. that are named for confederate soldiers or generals.<\/li><li><strong>Dedicate your time and resources to black lives.<\/strong> This weekend, try and volunteer or attend events. <a href=\"https:\/\/map.sixnineteen.com\/?source=MOVEON\">Move On<\/a> is offering virtual and in-person opportunities such as texting people to attend events. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/best-black-movies-on-netflix\/\">Choose a movie or show about black lives<\/a>. I suggest 13th or Dear White People. Most streaming services have added a black lives matter section!<\/li><li><strong>Fight for change in institutions.<\/strong> We still need schools, healthcare and policy to support the rights of black people, especially black women.
