Like all other terms, make sure you find out what gay means to each individual and know what terms are appropriate to describe their sexuality. One of these people was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/05\/movies\/the-death-and-life-of-marsha-p-johnson-review.html?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20200604&amp;instance_id=19074&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=100764780&amp;segment_id=30049&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=0edc099a348cc867917db465a79cea86\">Martha P. Johnson<\/a>, a <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: transgender\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;transgender&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Transgender describes people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth (GLAAD).&nbsp;&nbsp;For some people, their gender identity does not fit neatly into those two choices. For people that are transgender, the sex they were assigned at birth and their own internal gender identity do not match. Some people that are transgender try to bring their body in alignment with their identity, called a transition.FlagThe light blue stripes are the traditional color for baby boys. The pink stripes the traditional color for baby girls. The white stripe is for those who are transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Healthcare&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;This involves many surgeries such as top surgeries, gender reconstructive surgeries, the list goes on. People that are transgender can seek out voice therapy to change their voice to match their desired gender.&nbsp; Cost is the main barrier. Most health insurance companies do not cover surgeries or therapies. So, it is all out of pocket. For people that are transgender, this is near impossible because of income, especially if they are not out or not supported by their loved ones.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Sexual Orientation&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;Like everyone else, transgender people have a sexual orientation. People that are transgender may be straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer. For example, a person who transitions from male-aligned to female-aligned and is attracted solely to male-aligned individuals&nbsp; would typically identify as a straight individual. A person who transitions from female-aligned to male-aligned and is attracted solely to people that are male-aligned would typically identify as a gay individual.&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Pronouns &amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;Pronouns are extremely important for people that are transgender. Ask their pronouns and name. People that are transgender may go by a different name then what was given to them at birth. If you&amp;#039;re unsure which pronoun a person uses, listen first to the pronoun other people use when referring to that person. If you must ask which pronoun the person uses, start with your own. For example, &amp;quot;Hi, I&amp;#039;m Alex and I use the pronouns he and him. What about you?&amp;quot; If you accidently use the wrong pronoun for someone, apologize quickly and sincerely, then move forward with intention. The bigger deal you make out of the situation, the more uncomfortable it is for everyone.So if you are or know someone who is transgender, you are valid. It&rsquo;s important to recognize these women as part of the movement, because they haven&rsquo;t been talked about widely in the history of pride. As a straight person, I had never heard of Martha or Sylvia, and am just not educating myself about their lives.<\/p><p>&nbsp;The protest lasted six days.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Of course this wasn&rsquo;t the start of the LBGTQ+ movement, but from then on, the anniversary of the riots were remembered with celebrations and demonstrations. These events help bring awareness about LGBTQ+ issues (e.g. AIDS, <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: gay\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;gay&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;attraction to a person of the same genderIt is also used to describe people within the LGBTQIA+ community. It is not interchangeable with sex, which is based off genitals. It is decided is based on our internal experience, or &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;gender identity&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;.A person cannot choose gender identity, but they can choose words to define it.&nbsp; People can identify as male, female, transgender, non-binary. &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Genderqueer&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;is term used for those who don&amp;#039;t fit into the identity of masculine or feminine. &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Genderfluid &amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;represents those who may feel a woman for some period of time, or a man for another period of time. Some do identify as &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;agender&nbsp;&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;which can vary in meaning for many people but could mean genderless.It&amp;#039;s important to recognize&nbsp;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;gender diversity. &amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;This is an umbrella term to describe an ever-evolving array of labels people may apply when their identity does not conform to the norms and stereotypes others expect.This article is a great explanation of the above concepts.Check out my resource hub for more information.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>gender<\/span> identity is different from the privileged identity of heterosexuality. While people that identify as heterosexual can attend, as allies we must remember that these events are not for us. You can do so on with my<a href=\"https:\/\/norahspeaks.com\/blog\/glossary\/\"> LGBTQIA+ dictionary. <\/a><\/strong><ul><li>GLAAD also has a glossary and terms to avoid which you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/reference\/lgbtq\">here<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Show that you support the community in your actions.<\/strong> It&rsquo;s always nice to have a pride flag, or have a sign on your lawn supporting the community. But like with all allyship, show your support in your actions and language too. If you hear someone using hate speech or being ignorant, say something. True advocacy happens any time, not just when you&rsquo;re in the presence of someone in the community or at an event specifically for them (Like Pride or a protest).&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Use appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/norahspeaks.com\/blog\/glossary\/misgender\/\">pronouns<\/a> for a person! <\/strong>If you&rsquo;re not sure, ask what their pronouns are! Also, normalize the act of saying your pronouns by adding your pronouns to your social media bio, resume, email signature, etc. and use them when you introduce yourself as often as possible!<\/li><li><strong>Know that when someone comes out to you, it&rsquo;s because they trust you. It does not mean you have the right to share it with others.<\/strong> It takes a lot of courage for someone to come out. I actually did this once when I was younger, assuming because this person had come out to me that everyone knew. It was not my place to tell others about their sexuality. Now I know the weight that it carries when a person comes out to you.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Listen.<\/strong> As an ally, we cannot always relate. Show empathy and actively listen.<\/li><li><strong>Speak up.<\/strong> I mentioned it before, but it&rsquo;s worth reiterating. If someone makes a joke or a politically incorrect comment, voice your opposition and explain why.<\/li><li><strong>Make sure only to su<span style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal;\">pport businesses that support people of the LGBTQIA+ communities.<\/span><\/strong><ul><li>This<a href=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/files\/assets\/resources\/CEI-2020.pdf?_ga=2.74818450.1204327574.1591573733-1399518284.1591573733\">&nbsp;Human Rights Campaign document<\/a>&nbsp;outlines the best places to work for people in terms of corporate equality in the LGBTQIA+ community. Included are: Walmart Inc.,&nbsp; Exxon Mobil Corp. , Berkshire Hathaway, Apple Inc., and CVS Health Corp.
